On the night of 30 Sept 2024, at around 10 p.m., a female patient who had already passed away was brought to the emergency department of LLRM Medical College and SVBP Hospital. She had been referred from PL Sharma District Hospital. A second-year Junior Resident from the Department of Surgery was on duty at the time, performing his professional responsibilities. After confirming that the patient had been brought in dead, one of the patient’s attendants attacked the resident, striking him three times on the head with a wrench from an oxygen cylinder. The blows caused the resident to lose consciousness immediately, resulting in severe head injuries.
After the incident, the residents have withdrawn all ELECTIVE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES and refuse to work in this unsafe environment until their demands are met.
Demands:-
- Arrest of the individuals responsible for this assault.
- Provision of a hard copy of the institutional FIR.
- Implementation of the Medical Professional Protection Act.
- Enhancement of security measures within the hospital.
Our correspondent at LLRM Medical college talked to Dr Sakshi Singh, President of Resident Association. Dr Sakshi stressed that the CCTV’s are not working properly, the safety and security of residents have been on compromise making the environment not suitable, and demanded deployment of ex-army personals 24×7.
Following this, the residents have submitted a letter indicating their mass resignation to the principal of medical college. Recently after the RGKar Case from Kolkata, SC constituted a NTF (National Task Force) to look after these incidents, but sadly this not yet in implementation on ground level.
In this entire case, SP City Ayush Vikram Singh says that after the death of the woman, a report has been filed against the woman’s son and his friend on the basis of the complaint of the doctors. The accused are being searched for.
