Prevention Strategies for Cancer and Heart Attacks, Role of Lifestyle Changes, and the Integration of Technology into Healthcare

Physicians of Indian heritage are increasingly recognized for their contributions to healthcare, research, and administration in the U.S. Their dedication and expertise have established them as leaders, and they are now sharing this knowledge with their counterparts in India. With a growing population, India faces an urgent need to raise awareness and implement systems to prevent diseases.

It’s in this context, the AAPI Global Healthcare Summit (GHS 2024) held at the Le Meridian Hotel at heart of New Delhi, India from 19-20 Oct 2024, organised by the Association of American Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) in collaboration with Global Association of Indian Medical Students and participation from some of the world’s most well-known physicians, and industry leaders becomes very critical and significant.
Excerpts of Dr. Satheesh Kathula, President of The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), from his inaugural address.
“This year we gather under the important and timely theme of preventing cancer and heart attacks through lifestyle modifications and technology in a world where chronic diseases like cancer and cardiovascular illnesses continue to pose significant health threats, where corrective mission has never been more urgent.”

He addressed the rising challenges of cancer and cardiovascular diseases, citing aging, lifestyle changes, and urbanization as contributing factors. He highlighted the National Program for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Stroke, which provides health education, screenings, and support for prevention and early detection.
Shri JP Nadda emphasized the importance of lifestyle modifications, such as exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol, in preventing these diseases. He praised AAPI’s efforts in fostering medical collaboration between India and the US through the Global Healthcare Summit.
The CME sessions at the Summit focused on cancer and heart attack prevention, lifestyle changes, and the integration of technology into healthcare. Dr. Kathula announced the introduction of the Fellowship of AAPI (FAAPI), a prestigious recognition for physicians and healthcare administrators making significant contributions. For the inaugural year in India, three recipients were honored: Dr. Rakesh Sharma, Dr. Bhasnji Kundaria, and Dr. Raman Kumar.

Dr. Kathula expressed appreciation for the collaboration and support of Dr. Sunil Karza, Dr. Lokesh Edara, Dr. Anjali Gulati, Dr. Manmeet Ahluwalia, Dr. Brahma SDharma, Dr. Amit Govil, and Dr. Hetal Gor. He praised Dr. Shubham Anand, Organizing Secretary of GHS 2024, and his team for their efforts in making the event memorable. Dr. Soumya Neravetla emceed the Summit.


Amit Chakrabarty, AAPI President-Elect, shared that India’s President, Smt. Draupadi Murmu, suggested AAPI collaborate on a TB-Free Tribal India initiative, led by Dr. Manoj Jain. Upcoming efforts will also focus on diabetes and Ayurveda, with the 19th AAPI Global Healthcare Summit scheduled for January 2026 in Bhubaneshwar, Orissa.
