PGIMS Rohtak – Overcrowded and Overlooked: Students Urge Urgent Action on Hostel Shortage

Students of PGIMS, Rohtak

Medical and Dental Students’ from Pt. B.D. Sharma University of Health Sciences (UHS), Rohtak, has raised concerns regarding the severe shortage of hostel accommodation available for MBBS, BDS, and resident doctors at the PGIMS and PGIDS campuses.

Despite an increase in annual student enrollment in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, the university’s hostel facilities have not been expanded proportionally, leading to overcrowding. This issue has particularly impacted female students, who, in previous years, were accommodated in nearby hostels at Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU), but these facilities are no longer available, exacerbating the congestion in the existing girls’ hostels.

The students’ report that this overcrowding has created significant challenges, disrupting their studies, privacy, and general well-being.

There is shortage of both Boys, Girls and Resident Doctors hostels in PGIMS. Year by year congestion is getting increased.

This year MBBS & BDS 2024 batches faced a lot of problem in getting hostels. Till now, a significant no. of female students have not got hostel and have none other option than to reside in private PGs.

Multiple representations have been given to UHS Rohtak administration and State Govt. As per their response, tender for construction of new hostels are in process.

Undergraduate (Students & Interns) Assoc. has been continuously raising this matter.Says Dr Pankaj Bitthu – President, UGSIA, PGIMS, Rohtak

The lack of adequate hostel space is in direct conflict with the university’s designation as a residential institution, where students are expected to live on campus to focus on their demanding medical curriculum.

The students also appreciate the state government’s commitment to medical education through the establishment of new medical colleges but urge that similar attention be given to ensuring existing institutions like PGIMS and PGIDS have adequate infrastructure. They request His Excellency, the Governor and Chancellor of UHS, Rohtak, to expedite the construction of additional hostels to alleviate the ongoing accommodation crisis and better support the growing student body.
