The Haryana State Doctors Association has called for an increase in the number of posts for the upcoming Medical Officer recruitment to 2,000. The written exam for the recruitment was held on 1st Dec 2024 and result was announced on 6th Dec 2024, with a total of 7,994 applicants registered; however, only 5,994 candidates appeared for the test. The exam was conducted in a single shift from 12:30 PM to 2 PM across 33 centers in Haryana.
Currently, Haryana has 5,522 sanctioned medical officer posts, of which 4,016 are filled, leaving 1,506 positions vacant. The ongoing recruitment drive aims to fill 777 posts, drawing competition from 5,994 MBBS and PG-qualified candidates. Many of the applicants from the state have expressed willingness to work in rural areas. However, given the 1,506 actual vacancies and the limited 777 posts available in this drive, the competition remains exceptionally high.
TMB talked to Dr Ashish Poonia (State President of Haryana State Doctors’ Association), he said “The number of posts in the Medical Officer recruitment exam should be increased to 2000 to help create a healthier Haryana. On 1st Dec 2024, 6,000 doctors appeared for the exam to compete for 777 posts. Meanwhile, in Haryana, several Primary Health Centers (PHCs), Community Health Centers (CHCs), and District Hospitals in areas like Sirsa lack MBBS and MD doctors.”
“Also recently, diseases like dengue and chikungunya are spreading rapidly, and there has been a significant increase in patients suffering from cold, cough, flu, and asthma, so we need appropriate work force.” – he further added
Based on trends from previous recruitments, in 2022, there were 980 positions available. However, in the upcoming recruitment in 2024, after a gap of 2.5 years, only 777 posts will be available, making the competition extremely intense.
Given the more than 300 healthcare institutions and the growing demand for quality medical services, the recruitment of 2,000 medical officers is both crucial and necessary.
