In a landmark development, the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has clarified that AYUSH practitioners, holding degrees such as BAMS, BHMS, or BUMS, are now authorized to issue medical and fitness certificates. This decision extends to all AYUSH doctors registered with State Boards or NCISM and recognizes their qualifications as equal to those of MBBS practitioners for issuing such certificates.

The clarification came in response to a grievance raised regarding the exclusive reliance on MBBS doctors for fitness certification in organizations. As per the NCISM’s statement, the decision aligns with Section 34 (1) of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Act, 2020. This law ensures that AYUSH doctors with recognized qualifications are duly authorized to provide services requiring medical validation.
This update holds significant implications for healthcare access, particularly in regions with limited availability of MBBS practitioners. Organizations and individuals can now seek certifications from qualified AYUSH practitioners, streamlining the process and reducing dependency on allopathic doctors.
As per experts, the decision to authorize AYUSH practitioners to issue medical and fitness certificates raises concerns about patient safety, as their training in traditional medicine lacks the rigorous clinical exposure of MBBS doctors.
Equating AYUSH with modern medicine risks diluting medical standards, compromising the credibility of certifications, and potentially endangering individuals in high-stakes contexts.
While it promotes inclusivity, it may prioritize institutional parity over patient welfare and evidence-based practices. A balanced approach with defined roles and additional training is essential.
