Recently Telangana Medical Council on 26th June 2025 clarified the issue whether Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons are permitted to perform Aesthetic procedures and Hair Transplantations after consultation from the National Medical Commission in a letter Dated 29th May 2025.
Background: NMC’s Statement
On 26th June 2025, the Telangana Medical Council issued a clarification regarding whether Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (OMFS) are permitted to perform aesthetic procedures and hair transplant surgeries. This clarification came after seeking guidance from the National Medical Commission (NMC) through a letter dated 29th May 2025.
“The Hair transplant should preferably be undertaken only by those who have surgical grooming like formal surgical training such as MCh/DNB Plastic Surgery, MD/DNB Dermatology with adequate grooming in dermatological surgical procedures. It is also noted that the above named specialities have Hair Transplantation as a core topic in their Curriculum”.
Aesthetic Procedures:
“Aesthetic Procedures should be undertaken only by those RMPs who have adequate training to do these procedures as per their curriculum”.
“So, curriculum of various specialities should be guiding principle for all RAP’s while undertaking any procedure including Aesthetics & Hair transplant procedures”.
In light of the above clarification, the Telangana Medical Council notified the general public that Dentists (BDS), Dental Surgeons, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (MDS) do not have Aesthetic Surgery and Hair Transplantation as core subjects in their curriculum. Consequently, they lack the formal surgical training and requisite knowledge necessary to perform such procedures.
DCI’s Stand and Rise of Controversy
Responding to a notification issued by the Telangana Medical Council, the Telangana Dental Council on 28th June 2025 issued a public notice clarifying that duly registered Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, trained under the standards prescribed by the Dental Council of India (DCI), are fully qualified and authorised to perform facial aesthetic procedures and hair transplantation.
The TDC advised the general public not to be misled or unduly influenced by statements or communications from any organisations, councils, or bodies other than the DCI or the respective State Dental Councils concerning this matter.
The TDC affirmed that such procedures fall within the recognised scope of practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, as per the governing regulations and curriculum. This notification is issued in the interest of public clarity, professional transparency, and to uphold the integrity of dental and OMFS (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons) practice in the state, the DC clarified.
