
Lucknow: In a major breakthrough in the field of pediatric healthcare, Uttar Pradesh got its first paediatric heart centre at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS). The facility is intended to cater the important health needs of newborns with congenital heart diseases (CHD) that afflict thousands of infants in the state every year. It was Inaugurated in the presence of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Mrinalini Seth, founder and president of the California-based Saloni Heart Foundation USA.

Importance
- Congenital heart diseases are a major health challenge in Uttar Pradesh, with over 75,000 newborns at risk annually.
- Across India, approximately 2.4 lakh babies are born with CHD each year, and around 48,000 of these require surgical intervention to survive.
- In Uttar Pradesh alone, nearly 9,000 infants need such surgeries, but due to limited resources, many lives are lost.
- The new centre is expected to significantly reduce the high mortality rates associated with CHD by providing timely and specialized care.
The SGPGI Saloni Heart Foundation Centre is a joint venture of the SGPGIMS and US-based non-profit organization –Saloni Heart Foundation USA.
