Bhuj: On 26th Nov 2024, the Junior Doctor’s Association of Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences (GAIMS) and GK General Hospital, Bhuj, submitted an official letter requesting a revision of stipends for junior doctors and interns. The appeal draws upon directives from the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Government of Gujarat, emphasizing the need for stipend parity with state government medical institutions.
The association has outlined two key demands: an immediate increase in stipends for all junior doctors and interns in line with Gujarat government guidelines, and the disbursement of arrears, including the November stipend, retroactive to April 2024.
The letter references the NMC Notification dated 6th September 2023, which mandates that postgraduate medical students, including those pursuing diplomas and super-specialty courses, should be paid stipends equivalent to those provided to their counterparts in state government medical institutions within the same state or union territory.
Similarly, the NMC UG Medical Education Board Directive issued on 22nd April 2021 outlines that stipends for interns must be fixed according to the prevailing regulations of the institution, state, or university to ensure uniformity.
Additionally, the association has cited a Government of Gujarat directive (Resolution No. HFWD/SFR/e-file/7/2024/3520/J), which states that the stipend structure of state government medical institutions should act as a benchmark for all other institutions in the state, including private entities.
Dr Dhruv Chauhan (National Coordinator – IMA JDN) commented, “The GAIMS residents and interns are on strike for more than 3 days and the Adani foundation which is claimed to be the 2nd best hospital in Gujarat is not even able to pay them as per the govt orders”, he further added that “This is a failure of administration to not able to comply with govt rules and the govt needs to look into these issue and ensure the running of a premier institution by listening to doctors demands.”
The association emphasizes the need to follow these directives to ensure fair compensation for doctors and interns. This appeal aims to address stipend disparities and align institutional policies with government guidelines, promoting equity among healthcare professionals.
