NMC Welcomes Dr. Raghav Langer as Secretary: A New Era for Medical Reforms

Dr. Raghav Langer, a distinguished Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, has been appointed as the Secretary of the National Medical Commission (NMC). The Union Cabinet’s Appointments Committee confirmed his appointment at the Joint Secretary level under the Department of Health and Family Welfare.

Biography

Dr. Raghav Langer, a 2009-batch IAS officer from the Uttarakhand cadre, has a distinguished career that blends medical expertise with administrative excellence. Born on May 16, 1982, he graduated from Government Medical College, Jammu, before transitioning into public service. His tenure as Secretary of the NMC is set to continue until October 3, 2025, or until further orders.

Succession of Leadership

Dr. Langer succeeds IAS officer Sandhya Bhullar of the Gujarat cadre (2003 batch). His appointment is one among 35 IAS officers recently elevated to Joint Secretary or equivalent positions.

Dr. Langer’s extensive experience in administrative roles, coupled with his medical background, positions him as a pivotal figure in shaping India’s medical education and healthcare policies. His tenure is expected to bring innovative approaches and strengthened oversight to the NMC’s operations.

  1. COVID-19 Management: During his tenure in Jammu and Kashmir, Dr. Langer played a crucial role in coordinating pandemic response efforts. His proactive approach included public outreach programs and efficient resource allocation to mitigate the impact of the virus.
  2. Namami Gange Project: As Director of the Namami Gange Project in Uttarakhand, he contributed to the rejuvenation and conservation of the Ganga River, focusing on sustainable development and environmental protection.
  3. Kedarnath Rehabilitation: Following the Kedarnath tragedy, Dr. Langer was instrumental in streamlining rehabilitation efforts, ensuring effective disaster management and recovery.
  4. Administrative Reforms: In his roles as District Magistrate in various districts, he implemented governance reforms aimed at improving public service delivery and infrastructure development.
  5. Water Resource Management: As Director in the Ministry of Jal Shakti, he worked on initiatives related to river development and water resource management, emphasizing sustainable practices
