Background :
Delays in NEET PG 2021 and Their Effects on Resident Doctors
The issue arises from the delays in the NEETPG 2021 exam and its counseling process. The COVID-19 pandemic caused major disruptions, leading to a late NEETPG 2021 exam and a longer counselling time.
The last round of All India Quota (AIQ) Counselling for NEET PG 2021 happened in May 2022. Many candidates got their postgraduate seats on a much longer date, which meant that their studies now run past April 30, 2025 (which is Cutoff for eligibility of NEETSS 2024).
Since NEETSS 2024 requires candidates to finish their postgraduate studies by April 30, 2025, many students from the 2021 MD/ MS/ DNB etc batch are now unable to take the exam, even though they have completed their required coursework and training.
Why More Time is Needed
1. Unfair Exclusion of Qualified Candidates
The delays in NEETPG 2021 were not the fault of the resident doctors. They met all the academic and training requirements but now face being disqualified due to circumstances they couldn’t control. This situation is unfair because their exclusion is based on a set date rather than their abilities.
2. Fairness in Medical Exams
In the past, NEETPG and NEETSS criteria have been changed to help when there have been big academic delays. Since this situation is a direct result of the pandemic, it’s sensible to allow a small extension to the cut-off date, ensuring fairness for all candidates.
3. No Effect on NEET SS 2024 Schedule
Giving a 15-day extension to the eligibility cut-off will not affect the NEETSS 2024 exam or counseling times. This small change will make things fair without causing problems for NBEMS.
4. Avoiding a Future Shortage of Super-Specialists
India needs more trained super-specialists in different medical fields. If these doctors cannot take the NEETSS 2024 exam, the healthcare system may lose skilled professionals who could help provide essential services. A slight extension for eligibility would keep these qualified individuals in the field without causing issues.
The Appeal to NBEMS
Because of these problems, FORDA has officially asked the President of NBEMS for an extra 15 days for the NEET SS 2024 eligibility cut-off. The main points in their appeal are:
The delays in NEET PG 2021 and its counseling mean many resident doctors have longer study periods.
Many postgraduate doctors will finish their training just after April 30, 2025, making them ineligible under the current rules.
A 15-day extension would allow these candidates to take NEETSS 2024 without disrupting the exam and Counselling process.
This extension is important for fairness, inclusion, and keeping talented medical professionals in super-speciality areas.
