Aligarh, April 22, 2025 — In a shocking breach of security, gunshots were fired inside the Emergency and Trauma Centre of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital, Aligarh, AMU (JNMCH) around 7 PM on Tuesday. A group of unidentified assailants reportedly stormed the hospital premises and advanced towards the operating theatre complex, discharging multiple rounds and causing widespread panic among doctors, staff and patients. At present there were no casualties among the medical staff.
Chaos and Inaction Amid Emergency
The alarming incident unfolded rapidly, prompting the residents to rush to the scene. Resident doctors, despite the chaos, acted with restraint and professionalism, trying to manage the situation with minimal harm. However, their request for immediate security reinforcement was reportedly dismissed by the on-call Chief Medical Officer (CMO), who allegedly refused to contact the university’s Proctorial team.
Rising Safety Concerns Among Medical Staff
Residents have since raised serious concerns over the safety of doctors and patients, citing an increasingly hostile environment within the hospital premises. In response, the RDA has finally announced a strike after a proper general body meeting, demanding urgent and concrete action to ensure their safety and prevent such incidents from recurring.
Background of Incident
A horse show was underway at AMU when a dispute broke out on the field between a player named Adi and another student, Adil, over who should sit farther back. The argument escalated into a physical fight, and each side then called in their friends. Kicks and punches were exchanged, and spectators scattered in all directions. When the police were notified, they arrived at the scene.
Meanwhile, the injured student, Adil and his companions went to the proctor’s office to report what had happened. Adil was then admitted to JNMC for treatment. It’s alleged that shortly afterward, Adil and four or five of his friends also turned up at the medical college emergency department to be treated—and there the two groups renewed their heated argument, which again turned into a brawl followed by multiple rounds of Firing.
Key Demands from the Resident Doctors
- Demand for Adequate Security Personnel – The Resident Association categorically reject the presence of the Proctorial Team for security at the Trauma Centre and demands deployment of trained Police personnel or Ex-military officials, in line with practices followed at other premier institutes.
- Installation of Security Infrastructure – Metal detectors must be installed at all volatile entry and exit points within 48 hours to ensure the safety of healthcare workers and patients.
- Swift Legal Action Against Miscreants – All identified miscreants involved in the incident must be apprehended and strict legal action should be initiated within 48 hours, as they have already been recognized by the Proctorial Team.
- Resignation of Responsible Authorities – The association demands the resignation of the Proctor and the Medical Superintendent, as a moral responsibility for their failure in preventing this grievous incident.
Speaking about the incident Dr Sami says, “What happened today wasn’t just an attack on our hospital—it was an assault on every doctor’s right to safety, dignity, and the sacred duty we uphold. We walk through these doors each morning carrying hope and healing, never the fear of running for our lives. Yet the violence we faced today laid bare a broken system that leaves us vulnerable, unprotected, and unheard.”

Our collective voice can demand more than temporary fixes; we must insist on real, lasting measures for a secure, respectful, and violence‑free workplace. No doctor should ever have to choose between their life and their calling. Let today be our turning point—let us stand together.”
The Next General Body meeting is scheduled to be conducted on 23rd April 2025, at 2PM in RDA Complex of Hospital.
