Another assault on Female Orthopedics Resident within a week | RDA JNMCH AMU Calls for Indefinite Strike

The recent assault at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMCH), AMU Trauma Centre on the night of 5th May marks yet another alarming breach of safety within hospital premises. An on-duty female Orthopedics resident was punched in the face in the plaster room, while another resident was also physically attacked, sustaining a fracture of the 3rd metacarpal—an injury that directly impacts his ability to perform surgical duties. This incident reflects a grave threat to healthcare workers and significantly disrupts critical patient care services.

This comes barely a week after a similarly disturbing episode involving a female Radiodiagnosis resident in the USG suite. On 23rd April 2026, while attending to a patient with due clinical responsibility, the resident was subjected to verbal and physical abuse for not providing preferential VIP treatment. The situation escalated when the patient began recording without consent and, upon objection, physically assaulted the resident by slapping her repeatedly and issuing threats to her life.

It was noted with serious alarm that this incident is not isolated. Despite multiple past assurances following numerous such episodes, no effective or lasting measures have been implemented to ensure the safety and security of resident doctors. The GBM convened yesterday unanimously condemned the repeated failure of authorities to prevent such occurrences, terming the present incident as completely unacceptable.

Such repeated acts of violence not only endanger healthcare professionals, particularly female residents on duty, but also erode the integrity of the healthcare system. Immediate, concrete steps including strengthened security, strict legal action against perpetrators, and administrative accountability are imperative to prevent further escalation of such incidents.
