Tuberculosis (TB) still remains one of India’s biggest health challenges. But now, two new vaccine candidates — VPM1002 and Immuvac — are giving researchers fresh hope in the fight against the disease.
Recent phase-3 trial results suggest these vaccines could help reduce severe forms of TB, especially in children and high-risk groups.
Why TB Is Still a Huge Problem
India carries the highest TB burden in the world.
Every year:
Millions develop TB
Thousands die due to delayed diagnosis
Drug-resistant TB cases continue to rise
Despite treatment programs and awareness campaigns, TB continues spreading in crowded and low-resource areas.
The Problem With the Current BCG Vaccine
The existing BCG vaccine has been used for decades.
But it has limitations:
Works better in children than adults
Does not fully prevent lung TB
Protection decreases over time
This is why scientists have been searching for stronger and more effective vaccines.
Meet the New Vaccines
1. VPM1002
A modified version of the BCG vaccine designed to trigger a stronger immune response.
2. Immuvac
An immune-boosting vaccine developed to help the body fight TB infection more effectively.
Both vaccines were tested in large Indian clinical trials.
What Did the Study Find?
The vaccines were tested on over 12,000 household contacts of TB patients across multiple Indian states.
Researchers found:
Vaccines were generally safe
Mild side effects like injection-site pain were common
Better protection was seen against extrapulmonary TB
Children showed stronger immune protection
What Is Extrapulmonary TB?
Unlike regular TB affecting the lungs, extrapulmonary TB can affect:
Brain
Spine
Lymph nodes
Abdomen
Bones
It is often harder to diagnose and can become life-threatening if untreated.
Reducing these cases could be a major breakthrough.
The Most Promising Result
VPM1002 showed:
Around 50% protection against extrapulmonary TB
Better effectiveness in children aged 6–14 years
Experts say this is an important step because TB vaccine research has seen very limited success for years.
A New Hope in the TB Battle
For decades, TB vaccine development moved slowly. These recent results may finally mark a turning point.
While not a complete solution yet, VPM1002 and Immuvac represent an important step toward stronger TB prevention in India.
And in a country where TB affects millions, even small progress can make a massive difference.
